Green Street Hooligans

The Green Street Hooligans begins with a young man, Evan, being kicked out of Harvard 2 months before graduation.  His roommate had been using cocaine, and hid it in Evan’s closet.  The roommate, who is the son of a Congressman, gives Evan $10,000 to take responsibility for it.  Evan flies to England to see his sister, Shannon, whom he had not seen in years.  Her brother, Pete, comes by to visit, Shannon’s husband wants to spend a romantic night with her, and gives Evan a 100 lb note, and tells him to go to the Soccer game with Pete.  Pete is a member of a gang, called a Firm, that backs the local soccer team.  The Firm members are proud, prove themselves, and feel the thrill and passion of life by fighting the other Firms.  Evan gets caught up in the fights that break out, and starts to identify with Pete and the Green Street Elite (GSE).

 

The GSE members do not reason, they establish truth by statement.  They do not attempt to reason from first principles why something is right or wrong, why it should be defended or destroyed, they take very simple premises like territory, pride, disrespect, heritage, or difference as the basis for offense, belief, or motivation.
